The Converging series KIAF 2012

What's existing in the world of 'Betweens'? The grounds, fields, voids. silences. Do you see nothing there?,

Existing between the acoustics of the sounds and the 'visual worlds';
The encircling energies of the plastic elements;

As the space time continuum in color,line,form,textures in painting (聽覺的)(視覺的要素)(造型的要素)
deconstruct the base of its own esthetic rules and principles
the silence remains in betweens.:(餘白, 場, 虛, 空, 無, 沈默) :
In the betweens of quantumn and macro world as well as in the daily life;
In 'Betweens' of the structure of the sound and the pictorial Images :
Given the phenomenologies of such incompatible contradictions are existing
as absurdities, uncertainties are inevitably occurring
the element encompassing our sense perception encircling motion which stays in a state of transient moment ;




As the plastic acoustics shifts from the plateaus of plastic spacetime encircling rhythms to the plastics itself
and as the instruments of the visual art
keep shifting in silence from the pictures of landscapes to the linguistic plateaus of the intentionalities, causalities, and temporality.
The discrepancies in the mimics of the world of' the betweens'therefore is the world of voids and silence
where no propositions can be put.
This is the moment of entering into the new world of;
(1)Hybridizations,
(2)Transfusion,
(3) Transcendences :(4) Transmuting temporalities of the courses;
breaking up its linear relations: in order to create new realm of the work of art, the creatures, the transmorphers(?);
which is transient in nature within the historical contexts of the formalism:(5) Transformations ;
in the Nietzschean terms,
The pure new stem cells and its genetic original forms in search of the styles:
of the synthesis of the opposites ;
Everythings of the existing properties on the canvas should go together in one hand;
the temporalities of seeing, hearing, acting, thinking should be under the equilibrium encircled on the other hand.
The formal experiences and experimentations follow and come to the point after these processes are repeatedly taken

Wavefunctions of the vibration in classical musical acoustic modes are indeed modes of oscillation in plastic visual elements as well:
they possess a sharp energy and thus a keen frequency depending on the encircling color dynamics.

The angular momentum and energy are quantized, and only take on discrete values like those shown
as is the case for resonant frequencies in acoustics;

A Strange Interlude ; A Converging Series



October is coming.

I am now turning on the reverse engines of my journey in life;
To be more specific I am planning to land at the KIAF 2012.
I am now going to meet you and talk about my work ;
It may look so awkward being around the bustling booth
like ' pretty women' selling her soul and flesh to the anonymous devils(?),
so is the case the real 'strange interlude' between Seoul and New York.

변신(變身)의 계절.
변신은 그냥 주어지지 않습니다.
마음속 허상과 허구의 껍질들이 벗겨져야 합니다.
살을 벗끼는 침묵과 함께 있어야 합니다.
나는 내 그림의 살결을 벗기고 있습니다. 마음 속 묵은 각질들이 지겹게 싫기 때문입니다.

About these elements several questions comes to arise;
How are these elements directly related to my painting ? :


the Passages and Orbitals in the formation of the Grids and planes and membranes; on the empty and silent space.

하늘도 자기 모습을 벗을 때가 있는 것
스스로 벗는 것도 되지
씻기는 뭘 더 씻죠?
또 태풍이 올라온다잖아 요?
네? 열정이 폭풍처럼요?
헐!
가서 목욕이나 하고 들어와!
그리고 그냥 놀아!
따지지 말고

그림이 하자는 데로 해요

지금 쯤 옛날 이야기를 해도 되겠습니다.
길을 잃어버려 포기하려 했을 때..
다시 잃었던 곳을 찾아 되짚어 올라가던 방식입니다.

지금은 Dynasty 아래 그림으로 돌아 가는 것이 좋겠습니다.수평 수직에서

Han recalls a day in his school career which marked a turning point in his thinking.
Frustrated with his art work and his progress as a student,
he took his brushes and cut them up,
intending to discard them forever.
Instead he found himself experimenting with the denuded brushes.

This lead him to a new approach which focused on the application of abbreviated marks rather than expressionist brush strokes.
In the years since, Han has continued to pursue a variety of unconventional approaches to painting.
His ongoing aim is to bring together the supposedly antithetical histories of western and asian art.
In the process he reveals the varieties of pictorial space which painting is capable of creating.

Han's early explorations with structure took a variety of forms.
He broke color down into small geometric forms - circles, squares, triangles, hexagons and the like.
Sometimes he filled circles with dots, leading to vivid compositions which seemed almost to vibrate across the canvas.
Some of these paintings were completely abstract.
They were built up of small geometric elements which shimmered from a distance like mosaics.
Neither flat or conventionally illusionistic,
they suggested a strangely pulsating space which was simultaneously eastern and western.

The disparity between classic Asian and Western modes of representation is more than a disparity between different optical experiences.
It also reflects different ways of thinking about reality and different ways of expressing the relationship
between mind and body, nature and human life, the interior and exterior world.
For one reared in Western culture, it seems natural to regard each partner in these pairings as distinct and often irreconcilable entities.
The mechanistic view of the universe articulated so forcefully by Descartes and Newton underlies our notion of science and demands such separations.
In keeping with this world view,
Western art from the Renaissance to the end of the last century
also embodied a longing for hard facts and objective knowledge,
keeping spirit and matter at a distance
as it searched for ever more accurate methods for the transcription of visual experience.

But in the 20th century, a new physics and a new art began to suggest something quite different.
Einstein's theory of relativity blurred long established distinctions between space and time,
while Quantum Mechanics suggested that under certain conditions it is impossible to distinguish between waves and particles.
Such conceptions seem to approach a more Asian view about the blending of opposites.
Similarly, Western art, moving through Impressionism and Cubism to Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism,
has also repudiated the strict division between subject and object which was the basis of Renaissance illusionism.
In the process Western Modernism has opened the way for new ways of thinking about visual reality.

Developments like these suggest that the moment is ripe for a rapprochement between Eastern and Western art.
Such a reconciliation of opposites has been the life long mission of Korean artist Kyu Nam Han.

<.......> What could be the real issues confronting kyuNam Han's paintings?
We will see.it's a matter of the adaptations and the applications involved.

. 'Dynasty',(1984) oil on canvas 72 x 56 이작품(맨위) 산수화의 준법(峻法) 극대,소,종,횡.을
노자도덕경 42장 생각을 묵 색 선 형상에 적용 여백을 극대화한 일중다.다중일, 일생일 일생이 삼생만물(一生一,一생二생,삼생만물) 원리를 적용하였습니다.
이후 '4계 (四季,Four Seasons),(1984) oil on canvas,549 x 122cm 긴그림도 같은시점 청평에서 그린
그림은 졸업논문(The Dot, Its Illusion and Configurations 1977)을 산수화이론으로 의 접목시킨 '하이브리드'.
이때는 동서 회화구조의 근간이 되는 'Passage', 준법(峻法)
극대,소(dot),종횡,vertical,horizonta,minimal 요소를
원근법과 접목시켜
형상의 의미론적 접근을
음악적으로
운율과 시간의 사이사이(in betweens,
여백의 축제,( Encircling Figure Void, Figure Ground, Structure/Image, Uncertainty/Certainty,)를 시도하였습니다.

이후 실험은 지금까지 계속됩니다.
그 기본은 역시 구조/ 형상성, 골법/상형,의 동서양문화권의 이율 배반적 관계를 초월 탈(脫,inter,multi,cross-over,fusion,transcendental)하는 원융 관계의 추구,
Macro ;Nano의 Balancing(interdependent,ambivalent)라
함이 좋겠습니다.
언어란 원래 실체를 따르게 되겠지요.

산에서 내려오다가 그만 길을 잃어 버린듯 합니다.
앞은 깜깜합니다.
그런 데 조그만 자갈이 희미하게 발끝에 채였습니다.

나는 이 그림들이 자갈이기를 바라고 있습니다.
가까운 곳에 깊고 넓은 확트인 바다가 있으면..

하늘로 통할 수도 있을가?
상승과 초월..
마음이 빛과 소리가 되어

5 차원 무한차원의 마음들이 되어 저 하늘 나라와 통하면 어떨가?
살아 있는 기분으로 저 우주의 하늘 밖을 비상하는 기분은?
분명히 전률하는 상태일텐데...

아름 다운 자갈들이 저 수평선 하늘과 닿아있는 해변으로 가보란 말야...

둥근 자갈이 되기까진 무수한 세월과 아픔을 겪어야 하겠지요.
더 이상 씻길 수 없는 흔적.
사리 같은..
그래서 아름다운 것은 아닐텐데.
. 동근 형태가 일단은 무조건 좋습니다..

나의 그림들이 내 인생의 자갈들이 되려면
더 갈고 닦여야 하나요? 더 씻겨져야 되나?

한규남에게 당신은 그림에서 무엇을 탐구하느냐라고 묻는 다면
나는 "빛,에너지, 구조, 형상,이메지.의 총체적인 관계속에서의 새로운 미(美)적 질서"의 추구
라고 말하겠습니다.

그 많은 이슈 가운 데 더 간결하게 줄여서 이야기하라고 한다면 나는
"기운 생동 (氣韻.혹은 氣運생동) 으로 갖추어진 새로운 구조(構造)의 탐구"라고 말할 것입니다.
새로운 세계이여야 합니다

새로운 방식,
새로운 논리
새로운 내용
새로운 감각
새로운 시각은
고전적 감각에 바탕을 두고 있어야만
총체적인 새로운 조명이 가능하게 됩니다.
모네, 세잔느, 브라크, 폴록을 잇는... 정통적 흐름에 동양 산수의 시간성이 한 수 더 합해진 COOL(?)한 세계라고 나는 개인적으로 생각합니다.
미술사의 시간이 흐른 다음
먼 후세대 사람들이 평가할 문제입니다만
한류미술의 정수(精髓, 粹)는 그때 가서야 알겠지요...
지금은 과도기 이라고 생각됩니다.

실험을 하자면 좀 시간이 걸리겠지요
이즈음은 과학-미술-철학-미학-.여러분야가 함께 간다고 합니다...
그중 미술은 다른 분야와 함께 여전히 '빛과 그림자' 이슈를 다루는 한
. 그리고 보고/생각하고/느끼고/ 조용히 인간의 내면성( 마음)을 표현하고 있다고 하는 점에서
음악과 함께 여전히 선두 주자임이 틀림이 없습니다.
여전히 중후(重厚)하다고 생각됩니다.

기존의 역사, 일상성, 작가 주변을 둘러싸고 있는
Causality, Temporality의 총체적인 현실 상황.
..극대((極大, Macro), 극소(極小 Micro World, Elementary particle world)의 세계를
통달((通達)해야 할 것입니다.

이 또한 Reality 의 추구인데
이 문제는 과학자들의 영역 뿐만은 아닙니다.
작가들의 경우에도 해당되는 이야기입니다.
이즈음 물리학은 19세기 경 전기를 발견했을 때와 같은 인류의 획기적인 테크놀로지의 전환점을 가져올 수있는 많은 성과를 이루었다고 합니다.
바로 몇주일 전에 Geneva의 CERN 연구팀이
오랫동안의 과제였던 Standard Model의 중요한 element particle 'Higgs boson'을 발견했습니다.
현대 물리학의 중요한 성과이며 개가(凱歌)라고 합니다.
나의 최근 Times Square Series를 그리면서 느끼는 점을 간간히 적어 볼가합니다.
많은 논리적, 구조적, 실증적, 유사점(( 類似點,Analogy)들이 있기 때문입니다.
